It was a display of grace, poise, elegance, and expressions of scintillating talent when six Guyanese beauties from Guyana, Barbados, United States of America and Australia took to the stage of the National Cultural Centre on Sunday, July 31 to vie for the crown of the Miss Guyana World 2011.
In the end, only one woman could have won the crown and the privilege of representing Guyana at the Miss World pageant slated for London, England in November.

Miss National Communications Network, 22-year- old Arti Cameron, who holds an associate degree in Science with honours from La Guardia Community College in New York, and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Hunter College of NYC, outshone her five competitors to be crowned Miss Guyana World 2011, just before midnight on Sunday.
This stunning beauty, currently pursuing a career in medicine, also copped the special prizes for Miss Body Beautiful; Miss Photogenic, and Best Evening Gown. Her gown was created by Guyanese designer Michelle Cole.
Coming in as the first runner-up, and crowned Miss Princess of the World 2011, was Miss Cevons Waste Management, 21- year-old, Soyini Fraser. Fraser is a final year student at the Life Christian University in Florida, reading for a bachelor’s degree in Theology. She will represent Guyana at the Princess of the World contest in the Czech Republic later in the year.
In the second runner-up spot, and crowned Miss Guyana Caribbean World 2011 was Celeste Dolphin. Dolphin has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, and will soon graduate with a Master’s degree in Counselling. She will be heading to Tortola to represent Guyana with the hope of winning the crown of Miss Caribbean World 2011.
The third runner-up position, and crowned Miss Guyana United Nations 2011, was awarded to 21-year-old Utieka John, who is pursuing studies in History at the University of Guyana. John will represent Guyana at the Miss United Nations pageant in Tanzania, Africa.
The Best Talent prize was awarded to Ruqayyah Boyer, who performed a dramatic poem entitled “Breathe”, which she wrote herself.
The Miss Guyana World pageant was described as unique, since it showcased Guyanese young women who are tremendously talented. In the quest for the crown, each delegate had selected a platform based on the theme of the pageant “Beauty with a purpose: Empowering Guyanese women”.
To begin the show, the delegates performed the opening segment wearing shimmering lace lingerie, under which the contestants displayed their two- piece blue swimwear designed by Randy Madray.
Together with the beauties which paraded the stage, there was a lineup of performances at various intervals. Immediately after the girls were introduced to the audience, a special tribute was made in observance of the United Nations-designated “International Year for People of African Descent.” Doing this tribute was Odessa Primus, who performed a dramatic poem entitled “Chocolate Brown Woman”. This was followed by an interpretive dance done by Marissa Primo entitled “Nkiruka – the best is yet to come”.
Following the tribute, it was time for the talent competition. Taking to the stage first was Arti Cameron, who performed a dance “Mixed moods and attitudes”, choreographed by Carie Bookey of the Crystallite Dance Troupe. Her performance was well received, with patrons celebrating as she made her way off the stage.
Arti Cameron and Utieka John were the top contenders for the title after the final question segment, since they delivered to the judges’ expectations.
All preliminary scores from the swimsuit competition and the intelligence segment that were held earlier in the month were added to the final question scores and compiled for a grand tally to determine the new Miss Guyana World, 2011.
Prior to the pageant, the contestants gained points for their deportment, discipline, and other aspects, which were all deciding factors to select a well groomed woman to represent Guyana in London, England for the Miss World pageant.
The judges were attorney Amanza Walton-Desir; Miss Diwali 2003 and also the proprietor of Auto Fashions, Marcelle Surjatan; attorney, Munroe Forde; businessman Rose Shepherd and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King.
